Broadband Speeds

Broadband speeds what's your experience.

Here we get a very mixed service. British Telecom have a sort of monopoly but lease out to other providers. I've had huge problems and it took 2 months for them to finally get me a reasonable speed. I was getting less than half a megabyte despite being so close to the junction box I could sit on it. Finally after 6 visits from BT I started to get 4 to 5 megs which has now dropped off to 2 to 3. This is not great but a lot better than I have been used to. "I have a theory that broadband is actually alien technology and that no earth being understands how it works" We are about to receive Fibre Optic broadband and as the junction box is at the corner of the street I have been quoted speeds of 24 to 28 mbs. The down side is that although this is super fast, getting me connected is of course super slow. I have been waiting now for 4 weeks for an engineer and he is finally booked in for May 5th. If he hasn't taken early retirement before then. I know you live in a vast country which might make the situation easier or possibly more difficult but I'd be interested to hear what you are experiencing. Just type speed test into Google to find out.

 Probably not that far from the truth.

City folk will have a different tale to tell than we folks out on the fringes of civilization. I took up cable internet as soon as it was on offer in Melbourne (when it really was 'all you can eat' with no 'reasonable use' limits). Fibre optic to the node when there was only about 2 or 3 other households feeding off it. Moved up here 8 years ago to find there wasn't any form of broadband available. Let me tell you, dial-up hurt. 8 years on and I've finally managed to progress to ADSL2+ with theoretical speed of 24Mb/s. It's a nice theory.

Computers. They'll never catch on.

I'm getting a paltry 2.2 currently but it keeps cutting out. Why does it do that, my phone, TV, slot track, electric kettle doesn't cut out....

It's now rocketed up to 2.6 is that because I'm talking about it.

Try rural... It's so much fun. As I said before, the theory is nice. Wish the practice was the same.
