Ok some exciting photos of the all new Scaleauto 'Spyker Squadron' Le Mans 2007 box set which looks bloody awesome - Sorry they are a bit large but wow! :)

Important to note that the box design is a prototype and not the final design.

I have sold a bit of Scaleauto in NZ, and have a Scaleauto Mercedes GT3 which is adapted to sidewinder for wood track racing and is pretty quick. I've owned and used one of their lathes, and sold a pile of DS brand basic resistor controllers as Scalextric upgrades when I had Slotraceshop.

I had a vague feeling they owned DS Slot controllers and timing systems. but again, it was all a bit fuzzy.

So last weekend while in Igualada at the XXI Campeonato de España, I was able to meet two generations of the Basos family behind the brands - 3 counting Ivan's sons. IBB stands for Ivan Bernat Basos, the first initial and surname of Juan's two sons.

DS was developed by them, and of course they own Scaleauto, and MSC rally and raid ranges, which are now marketed under the single Scaleauto entity.

They are also the Spanish distributor for Slot.it, right since Slot.it began in 1998.

CRICCRAC slot shop, which will be known by many, is their own local retail outlet, and located in the same buildings as the IBB manufacture and warehousing.

I have come away impressed with my much increased though still limited knowledge of the products, and more so with the character of the people behind them.

The DS race control system began on slot tracks, which were typically installed, in their indoor karting and 10 pin bowling, facilities, which were part of the original family importing and local facilities businesses int he 1980s and 1990s. In 1996, a decision was made to re-focus the company in the slotting field, and Juan's sons Bernat and Ivan have moved into senior management roles. (Juan at left and Ivan to right of picture). One of the RAID videos I will put up, has Bernat in the red sweatshirt doing battle.

DS race control products are used widely in Europe. For us; used to small screens with bright colourful displays of live driver data (which we all try and read, and sometimes fall off trying to read); the DS system is a complete departure.

14910344_1123991331042438_189896976810955798_n.jpg?oh=35a154a0eb396f2fa93f7b65cd786f26&oe=58935119

I still don't know a lot about the technical capabilities, but the shots below give a bit of an indication. The PC output was projected onto the big screen - about 9 metres tall. Replicated onto 100 to 120cm screens around the pit bays, It was certainly the focus of many detailed discussions between heats.

Other DS race control systems in the Rally and Raid linked the multiple tracks together to record driver times as they rotated drives through the multiple tracks. Each driver would insert a programmed credit card type card into a slot to indicate he was now the active driver/entrant, start when he and his chosen marshals were ready, then sign out. Race control was sitting up at Parc Ferme.

The boxes look bulky, and have been around for many years. Ivan showed me some very small blue boxes with robotics boards inside and micro connectors to interface with the outside world. Something roughly the size of Arduinos. The new system has been 2 years in the development; is due out next year, and will be "plug and play". I imagine it will be a lot cheaper to build than the big steel boxes, and it will provide an alternative to Trackmate for home racing, clubs, and pay to use public raceways.

I probably absorbed a lot more than I've scrawled here, but it doesn't come to mind. Feel free to ask me questions.

Tomorrow I'll start on the 1/32nd and 1/24th product news.

Oh to have room for a 1/24th track. I just looooooooooooved the 1/24th GT racing.

there is so much gurgling at Scaleauto, I can't see Ivan or Bernat posting on the forum anytime, soon. But I'll try and hoover some news out of them going forward.

On the 1/32nd front

I have a vague recollection that the following Martini may be a market-specific release, but don't quote me. I spent around 7 hours of simply listening and absorbing information over the weekend - without thinking to put the record on my phone...... duh. Trying to remember it after 3 nights short sleep is a bit of a mission.

I can hear the begging from here in Hawkes Bay "Please pretty please can we let GT2s run in our GT3 class"

- This was uber sharp.

One point of discussion was about the fact that going forward, all the 1/32nd scale cars will come in both "R" for "racing" and "HS" for Home Series. Both the RT2 and RT3 chassis/pods are gone-burger, and they are already producing the latest Porsche with an improved chassis, and the new chassis are coming out model by model so you can retro-fit existing cars.

ALL "R" models will be angle-winder, so nothing like the old RT3 sidewinder as the HSV and some BMWs came with.

The chassis and pod are now being made from every stiffer materials.

- I found that a bit sad as in our neck of the woods,(pardon the pun) racing on wood, we find sidewinder cars so much easier to set up, and drive hard consistently. So for us that means a pod and motor swap.

On the Home Series variants, the single piece chassis (like a Scalextric car), is running spherical rear axle bushes in a claw mount like their and Slot.it's pods. The chassis has been significantly beefed up recently, and the new Home Series Porsche chassis is already available off the shelf as a replacement. The material is a lot stiffer and has large longitudinal L shape bracing built into it to stop the proverbial bowing that plagues non-podded cars, and to resist diagonal flexing under load.

I'll have to try and grab some chassis pics later, as I forgot to take any when I was over the other side at IBB.

Okay, now for some 1/24th scale

This is a new plastic chassis, for use on all 1/24th Scaleauto road cars. It is fully adjustable, uses the same body mounts as the current chassis, and thus can be retro-fitted to any spare bodies you have, used in a chassis swap if you want to run the same "body" in both steel and plastic chassis racing.

And yes, that IS a mount for a Carrera, O2, or SSD digital chip. - No it doesn't signify any un-released news, but is simply future-proofing, for anyone wanting to use Carrera track or wooden digital with 100mm plus lane spacings and digitise these cars.

Ivan Basos explained that they are totally reworking the philosophy of their 1/24th offerings, to provide the same 2 price point options in 1/24th as they do in 1/32nd scale. Every 1/24th release going forward will come in two options, Cars with the plastic chassis option are expected to retail around 80 Euro. That's not much more than some 1/32nd offerings in Europe such as NSR and Thunderslot.

He used words to describe the level of rigidity in this plastic chassis, I forget the exact turn of phrase, but it was something in the realm of *^*@)#@*%$ stiff.

The steel chassis option will price point for around double that going forward, But that won;t be on the existing chassis. They feel they had developed the existing 1/24th steel chassis about as far as they could go in the combination of design and materials. So there is a new steel chassis coming in 2017, which will be a step up in concept and rigidity of materials. It will price-point around 160 Euro, but will be capable of tuning for higher power, tracks speeds and cornering stability. They should have official news out on that in a few days. So 1/24 exponents may want to watch the European forums.

I asked IBB to check everything I wrote, as I was going from memory, some days later, after about 7 hours spent in discussions with various slot people last weekend.

One bit of the DS Slot timing history was incorrect. (Surprised that is all I got wrong :) :) )

I have altered it in the thread on page 3, and copied the same text here, just in case someone absorbs wrong information and ends up repeating it.

The DS race control system began on slot tracks, which were typically installed, in their indoor karting and 10 pin bowling, facilities, which were part of the original family importing and local facilities businesses int he 1980s and 1990s.

A new livery of the Porsche 911 GT-3 RSR in 1/32nd scale.

These are the two cars of Porsche North America team participating in the 24 hour Rolex Daytona 2014.

Note: One of these, the #912 car included as one of the driver roster, Kiwi driver Earl Bamber - We tend to forget he is a works driver iN Europe most of the time. Not bad to get two slots with Kiwi drivers in 2 months - after the Slot.it Kouros Sauber in November with Mike Thackwell.

The Porsche with the number #911 is code SC-6139 [home series version with single part chassis and S-can SC-08b motor as sidewinder] and SC-6139 r ["Racing" version with angle-winder podded chassis utilising SC-11b "boxer" motor] winner in his category, driven ed by Nick Tandy, Patrick Pilet and Kevin Estre.

And with the ref. SC-6140 and SC-6140 r the team mate with the number #912, piloted by Earl Bamber, Michael Christensen and Frédéric Makowiecki.

Same two configurations.

- You entered a car with one of those version 1 chassis into the Group 5 proxy didn't you?

I'll be very interested to learn if the new one really IS better.

Ivan said it would be a lot stiffer, especially end to end, which is where i reckon a lot of the solid chassis cause issues, as the tension at the start of acceleration spring loads the chassis, then it releases especially when you go from acceleration on short straights to braking, and destabilizes the car as you begin to turn.

I didn't get much chance to examine it in person when I was there, as they only had a test one there in the new products display cabinet at the event, so we had limited amount of time to handle while we took pics. I couldn't de-body it to do any hand twisting.

But the "beams" running end to end look really substantial, and the motor mount has been beefed up, which hopefully reduces any tendency for diagonal twisting under load.

Sorry, been a bit slack on Scaleauto releases. Ivan keeps putting data out while we are away traveling, and I don't seem to catch up with posts.

There have been a couple of gorgeous cars lately, and two updated chassis for the "MSC" metro rally cars. [Gazza sorted that one]

Here's one for the 1:24th boys.

We continue to evolve our products and this time, we present you the new wheels special foam for adaptation in the classic cars 70's, gr. C and the GT-90 Brm Model Cars Manufacturer 1/24. Scale versions available with foam hardcomp front and rear wheels with the compound procomp-4, both tires made in high quality dural for axles 3 mm., with lace, especially for the original hubcaps.

I dug up one video I shot in November at the Spanish Slot Festival in Igualada of these puppies.

The tech marshal chap loading the cars onto the track at start before scurrying back up to the Race Control podium is the CEO of Scaleauto, - the "I" in IBB. Sorry, should have kept it rolling longer. The track is (he thinks) - around 230 feet, and they were doing 10 -11 second laps.
