2013 Scale Auto Victorian World Championships

King Willys Raceway

21 and 22 September 2013

Classes

There will be two races. An individual sprint race on Saturday Night, and a 5 hour Endurance Race on Sunday. Both classes will be run using Scale Auto cars to the 2013 regulations as set out in this forum.

The Track

The track we’ll be racing on is the King Willys Scale Track. It is 25 metres long with 5 lanes. Lap times are about 5 seconds for a Scale Auto car, so traffic won’t be a big problem. The lane centres give plenty of room for Scale Auto cars, so side-by-side racing is a real possibility (and a lot of fun!) It’s quite an easy track to learn, so you should be able to spend your time enjoying yourself rather than battling with the intricacies of the track.

Handout motors

Both classes will use handout motors which will be the Scale Auto SC-26 Endurance motor with 12 tooth pinion. The handout motors will be added to the entry fees ($15.00 per motor). So sprint drivers will have to come up with $30 plus their own 12T pinion and Endurance Race teams with $60 plus their own 12T pinion.

Control tyres

Both classes will use the Scale Auto ProComp 3 tyres. The orange writing on the tyre sidewall must be visible at tech control. Your spare tyres for the Endurance Race must be presented at tech control and they will be marked and then returned to you.

Entry numbers

The Endurance Race is limited to 5 teams of three or four drivers. That’s because it’s a five lane track. There is no limit to the number of entries for the individual sprint race. We hope that all of the endurance drivers will race in the sprint race. To that end, loaning of spare cars to other drivers is greatly encouraged.

Please send entries to me at tim@acmeslotcars.com. Endurance Race entries will be taken on a first-come-best-dressed basis.

Race Format – Sprint Race

Drivers will qualify on a lane to be chosen by the race director. You will get one minute to qualify and your best lap will count.

Drivers will then be seeded into heats, and each driver will race for 3 minutes on each lane. Once all the drivers have finished their heats, they will be ranked according to their total laps. The top 5 drivers will then race in the main final for the top 5 places by racing for 3 minutes on each lane. 6th to last place will be determined by heat laps. We’ve decided to run it like this so that the overall winner is determined in an exciting final showdown.

The usual common sense rules about marshalling, working on cars, changing lanes and lane stickers etc will apply. If a part breaks off your car, you needn’t fix it because that would spoil your fun.

Race Format – Endurance Race

The race will be run over 5 hours. That’s 60 minutes on each lane, with the drivers running for equal times on each lane. Lane choice will be determined by qualifying position. Qualifying will be the usual one minute with the best lap to count.

If a part breaks off your car, then you’ll have to fix it (except for wing mirrors). That’s how we ran it at Hornsby, at that’s how we’ll run it at King Willys.

Trophies

There will be trophies for concours, and for first, second and third in each class, plus top qualifier. In the sprint race there will also be a trophy for 6th place, being the highest placed non-finalist. These cars are so close that the guy who loses out will probably only miss by a matter of inches, so he deserves some consolation for having to watch the final rather than race in it.

Timetable

Friday 20 September

19:00 – 22:00 Free practice for Scale Auto cars. Track time will cost you $10.

Saturday 21 September

12:00 Raceway opens. Free practice for Scale Auto Cars.

17:00 Free practice finishes.

17:30 to 18:00 Sprint race motor handout and shakedown

18:00 Scrutineering and concours for sprint race

19:00 Sprint race.

Presentations will be made after the race. Polite applause will be appreciated. If Garry Johnson wins, then sledging may be used instead of polite applause.

Sunday 22 September

09:00 to 10:00 Official Endurance Race practice

10:00 to 10:30 Endurance Race race motor handout and shakedown

10:30 to 11:00 Scrutineering and concours for Endurance Race race

11:00 to 16:00 Endurance race

Presentations will be made after the race. We can’t do it any earlier than that because we won’t know who won it.

Food

Drinks and snacks are available at the raceway. There is a very good pizza delivery shop close by, so you’ll be able to have something to eat at dinner time. I recommend the Aussie pizza. It’s excellent. After the sprint race, there should be some be time to sit around and have a drink and tell lies about your heroics. You are encouraged to bring your own refreshments.

Questions

If you have any questions, please ask them here on the forum so that everyone can see.

Greg and Chris came over this afternoon and had a play with their ScaleAutos. Greg's Mercedes was handling beautifully - probably the best handling ScaleAuto I've ever driven.

After playing around we had a race and here are the results.

1. 164 laps Me (Porsche)

2. 163 laps Greg (Mercedes)

3. 157 laps Geoff (Porsche)

4. 156 laps Chris (Audi)

The track was great to race these cars on. You really have to plan your passes, but they are quite possible if you get it right. If not, you have to wait until the next opportunity. Through the sweeper you can even get away with driving side-by-side, which can be quite thrilling (in a nervous, ass puckering way!)

Thanks to Geoff for hosting our impromptu race. There is a photo of the cars on the King Willys facebook page.

Woo hoo! We now have a full field of 5 teams.

Updated Teams:

The Kingz: Geoff Little, Rob Ferris, Andy Stringer

The Jokers: Jan Roestorf, Tim Tyler, Tobias Lestrell

Team Phoenix: Greg Colgan, Dave Scrivener, Garry Johnson

Mt Panorama: Chris O'Toole, Mark Pollard, espsix (TBC)

Thanks guys for getting in so early. We'll do our very best to ensure that you are entertained.

From what I can tell, we may have a few extras for the individual race, which would be great. I'll be doing some testing and tuning this weekend, and with a bit of luck Greg and some of the others will be there. We'll post full testing data for you, so you have an idea of which cars aer working the best. (And, of course, what heroic bench racers we are...)

Tim,

....you must be joking, you're racing what.....? (for some those words mean 2nd place, for others it means fun will be had)

Good to hear. Look forward to catching up with some new Scale Auto converts and some great past competitors of mine. The interest in this class down in Victoria is encouraging and I think we will see more of these events down there on all the great tracks around Melbourne.

Flights are booked and we're all set to come and do battle in another episode of this most enjoyable national series.

See ya,

Jan

Confirm Team Mt Panorama as Chris, Mark and Brett.

Chris has Mark Pollard in his team, and they have asked me to drive with them.

I've also heard a rumour of a fifth team being put together as I write this.

Should be a great weekends racing!

Well said!

It's nice to see the interest in this event, and thanks Shane for your good wishes. It's a pity you can't come this year, but maybe next year you can be here. I hope so!

Unfortunately our planned test session didn't eventuate last weekend. As usual, the Gods made a mockery of we mere mortals who had plans. Geoff was in Rocky for a wing car race, Greg is flat-out getting ready for the APC, and I had urgent family commitments to deal with. However, from next weekend on I imagine things will wind up to fever pitch. I will do my best to post regular updates, including any tuning/testing info that might be of interest.

Rob Ferris is building the endurance car for the King Willy's team, and I saw the painted body last night. It was... beautiful! Rob is an ace car builder and tuner so I'll be surprised if he, Geoff and Andy aren't right up there all weekend. I think this race will be just as tough to win as Sydney was.

Hi guys,

'.....the plans of mice and men' ..... I guess we all know the saying.

Unfortunately Tim has informed me that his mother is terminally ill and he has been at her bed side over in NZ for the past week. Whilst we all hold hope in our hearts that Tim is fortunate to have her around for many more days, weeks, months and years - it is not in our hands and we may very well have to make do without him at the event.

To this end, I would like to issue an open invitation to anyone who may wish to join the Jokers as a driver, to PM me. If you want to drive and experience one of these great GT's, come and join us. All we need from you is to keep the car in the slot and in good running condition.

Hang in there Timmmmeeee.
