2013 Scale Auto Victorian World Championships - Full Details

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

Thank you to everyone who have passed on condolences with the passing of Tim's mother. I am sure Tim will make his own responses when he has had time to settle back into daily routine.

Also thank you to everyone for offering solutions to our driver problem - this has now been resolved and the Jokers will be complete, ready, able and eager to take on all-comers this Sunday.

Cheers,

Jan

Hello again everybody, and thank you very much to all of those who sent their good wishes to me over the last couple of weeks. Geoff, Jan and Garry have been keeping the ball rolling, so it looks like we are set for a fun weekend of Victorian World Championship battles. I've got NO idea what the pace in testing has been because I've been away for so long, so car performance will be an adventure for all of us!

I will endeavour to report back as the weekend progresses, starting with tonight's practice sessions.

Friday Night Practice Report

Rob Ferris and Geoff Little have done some fine tuning on the track, so it is even smoother than before and that little bump at the end of the sweeper has vanished. It is nice!

Jan R and Garry J took about 5 minutes to learn the track and were right on the pace very quickly. The best laps I saw from them were 5.08s (Garry, Mercedes) and 5.05s (Jan, Porsche). I managed a 5.04s lap with my Audi.

The lanes are very even for speed. The inner lanes (Orange, Green, White) are so close that you can't measure the difference: we were running under 5.1 seconds on all of them. The outer lanes are very slightly slower - perhaps 1/2 a tenth, and you can get down to 5.1s laps.

As always, though, it's the consistency that is the issue. Even if you can pop that incredible 5.0s lap, you gotta be able to back it up with another 30 like it!

Sprint Race Highlights

13 entries

TQ: Jan Roestorf - 5.066 seconds.

1st. Timmy Tyler 168 laps

2nd. Tobias Lestrell 167 laps

3rd. Jan Roestorf 163 laps

4th. Greg Colgan 155 laps

5th. Garry Johnson 31 laps

Garry's car got damaged in the first bracket, which put him out of the running far too early. Greg's car must have got a bit of damage somewhere as well, because he was on the pace to start with but then seemed to drop back for no apparent reason. Jan was FAST!!! and was winning after the first bracket, but dropped back with a few minor mistakes, and couldn't make up the ground again because you just can't with these incredibly close cars. Tobias (the boy genius) almost beat me with my spare car. Bloody hell, he's good! I was lucky enough to win by just a few feet at the end, after spending most of the race whining about the unfairness of the world. It was a really, really tough race for everybody. These things are amazingly close!

Tomorrow is the main event. That'll be close too, I guarantee it.

Enduro Results

1. The Jokers: Jan, Tim, Tobias 3321 laps (Audi)

2. Team Phoenix: Greg, Dave, Garry 3267 laps (Porsche)

3. King Willys: Geoff, Rob, Andy 3137 laps (Audi)

4. Team Garage: Kevin, Doug & Ian 2974 laps (Mercedes)

5. Mt Panorama: Chris, Mark, Brett 2827 laps (Audi)

This race was very close indeed for the first three hours. Team Phoenix pulled out a handy lead on the Jokers in each of the first two brackets. Their car was running really well, and they were easily the most consistent team of drivers on the track. However, when they hit blue lane the Jokers edged ahead. For some reason the Phoenix car just didn't have the pace on blue lane that it had on the previous 2 lanes. In the fourth bracket Phoenix and the Jokers were very even, which allowed the Jokers to keep their lead but not extend it. In the final bracket, the Jokers managed to get a few more laps on Phoenix because Phoenix were on red lane.

King Willys looked safe for the podium right from the outset, because they had just that little bit more pace than Mt Panorama. Mt Panorama held 4th until very near the end when their body lost the diffuser and couldn't be repaired. That was a pity for them because they were pretty close to King Willys all the way. However, it was very nice luck for Team Garage who finished 4th on their first time racing a ScaleAuto car. For Kevin, it was the first time he'd ever raced on sponge tyres!

Concours was won by Rob Ferris for the King Willys car, which was a very nice rendition of the Craig Lowndes Skwirk Audi R8 from the Bathurst 12 hour.

Thank you to everybody who came to our event. Geoff did an excellent job of organising the track and facilities, and Garry and Jan kept the show running with no bother and no stress. Good lads they are.

Well done to the Jokers for a deserved win and thanks to everyone that was there and made it a great event. Thank's to Jan and Garry J for making the trip down from QLD. Special mention to my 67 y/o dad Jeff whom had never driven these cars before or been on that track and still managed to out qualify me with my own car in the sprint race and would have placed better than me if it wasn't for some nasty knocks !!pod_zpsb3db5008.jpgstartgrid_zpsd0724309.jpgtrack_zps3448c825.jpgconc_zpsd169525f.jpgpits_zpsd446cc82.jpg

Hi all,

Wow, Melbourne was cold........

But the racing was hot - thank you to our hosts, both at the racing and accommodating us for the weekend - much appreciated Geoff and Tim. Your schedule allowed for some quality social time and personally I loved the fish and chips after the race.

The track was fast, especially on Saturday morning with us seeing a couple of 4,9s. But the proof for everyone was most definitely on Sunday during the enduro. The first bracket was close and the top two teams ran within 3 laps. During the 2nd hour Phoenix gapped the Jokers by another 3 laps and laid down the challenge with the gap now 6 laps. Personally I must thank Tim and Toby for fronting up and not allowing the Phoenix team a greater advantage. I guess that is what team racing does, it masks the weaker driver - in this case me. My out-of-slot experience from Saturday seem to continue in those first 2 hours. But it thankfully came to an end and during the 3rd hour I managed to hold my own, whilst the other two overtook and extended the Jokers into the lead by some 18 laps. This was the turning point as the gap kept growing from here on as both Tim and Toby continued their greatness. Thank you guys, I was fortunate to be part of the Jokers.

Garry, Greg and David ran great - many a close fought personal race went down during the 5 hours, especially between Greg v Toby, David v myself and also Tim v Garry. Other on track battles between Ian and Geoff, Mark and Andy also caught the attention of all.

These Scale Auto enduro's are some of the best races any slotracer can get involved in and I can report that the handout SC-26 motors ran flawlessly from start to finish. The motors ran the same times in the first hour as they ran in the last hour as Tim showed running a 5.094 during the last 20 minutes of the race. I had some reservations about using the 12T pinion on the small track, but it was absolutely no problem - in fact it felt great. Good acceleration, brakes and top end speed. One of the most noticeable differences between this enduro and others ran before, was the absolute minimal tyre wear - most cars did not reduce ground clearance by more than 0.1 to 0.2mm. Again an obvious attribute of the motor choice made by King Willy's.

We look forward to the next event in this annual series and introducing even more new converts to it.

Cheers,

Jan

Thanks to Geoff for the excellent venue and track, to Tim for his enduring generosity and culinary expertise, to my team mates Greg and David for putting up with my, at times, inconsistent driving (really must get more practise).

For mine, although all the Jokers team drove exceptionally well, Tim was the stand out. He could reel off 5.1s at will on any lane regardless of the traffic.

Congratulations to the winners, commiserations to the losers, see you all next time.

Cheers,

Garry J

I'm with you guys. I'm a Facebook atheist too. The ONLY reason I have it is to support King Willys.
