The Ladies ( Where Are They Now )

In the 60,s when i started slot cars there were a couple of very good lady racers , but it was a mainly lads sport however in my first club we did have three ladies who participated in the racing , two because it was the only real time they saw their boyfriends especially on a Friday and they were fairly good racers driving others machinery most of us lent our cars out , then there was my other half Sandra who was very good and ultra competative who started of using mine but soon developed her own cars .

It was no suprise to me , possibly to others that girls could do this and Sandra built and drove large yank tanks like the Thunderbird and the Pontiac GTO with great gusto so much so that on the inside red lane she was a fierce competitor as she had the knack of power sliding a GTO through bends so it swept everything of outside of her, i used to stand marshalling at the end of our main straight waiting for the shout from 3 male drivers marshall me car!!!, as she outbreaked them at the end of the straight and powered on leaving me to reslot the rest of the field.

Then there was Mel and Melanie who i met at another club i joined for a while who were rapid and we had teams and i had both these ladies in my team of 4 basically as they were left to the end of who wanted who in their team, but i knew i was on to a good thing as they were quick with assets , Mel would lead of for the first stint clad on the rostrum in hot pants , ( ok not political correct now ) but then interesting, and for some reason the other drivers got distracted , not sure why chuckle so she usually handed over a lead to my brother to carry on with then i took over and ended with Melanie her sister also clad in hot pants to finish the race of , how could we loose we didn't.

It seems to me looking at clubs over here where have the ladies gone , they drove as well as us , sometimes better were ultra competative always wanted to beat the boys and could build really good cars and in the age of really good slot cars now you can buy over the counter where are they , is it the same down under , in proxy land the only lady i can remember participating in that was Ember another great car preparer, be good to see some new blood in slot cars of all sexes.

My two daughters race for some years, mainly 1/24th. One daughter managed a local commercial track for some time. Family took over her time.

Other one just lost interest when the commercial track closed.

Did have a grand daughter building cars But she has recently moved interstate.

I met my wife at a track she was managing in Brisbane. She used to race a little too.

I came up from Sydney to build a new track at the raceway and never left.

Cheers,

I don't think I've ever raced against the fairer sex unless you count Gazza in his hot pants.

I thought we agreed that what happens at a race meet stays at the race meet.

Quickly read this post before it is deleted or i turn grey again

It's the environment guys..

Many years ago I went to a club track in Uden Holland and was surprised to find lots of ladies racing slotcars. By the end of the night it became obvious why they liked coming...

1/ Everyone was dressed nicely like they were going out for dinner - not blokes in trakkie daks, shorts and thongs or worst still grubby motor racing mechanic's overalls /shirts.

2/ The place had the vibe of a private club bar with low lighting, soft music and a lounge/bar area that sold beer, wine and hot pomme frits.

3/ In the pit area a few guys had pulled out briefcase size pegboards of slotcar parts and other guys were selling nicely set-up 2nd hand cars so a newbie could buy and drive straight away..

4/ Slotcar boxes were minimal and only a couple of classes were raced... not as many classes as possible in the shortest amount of time. This way it gave time to retreat to the bar area and get into social/car conversation.

5/ The girls were very competitive, all knew each other and it seemed to be a regular night they allowed for on their social calander... Some even bought along their single girl friends.. although I was'nt lucky enough to find out why

So, here's the thing. Maybe to get new racers, and even ladies we should be looking at having a social night once every now and then so we can introduce our partners, and non slotcar friends to racing... or we can continue with our lack of social skills and wonder why we cant get new people to race...

We've had a couple of girls race over the 6 years I've been at WASCRG.

One was the daughter of a fellow racer and she was actually quite good, knew how to handle a slot car.

I suppose it helped when Dad has a 30m+ timber track and 2 girls no sons.

The other has been coming for a few years now with her partner, now husband.

She is a very capable driver and gives as good as she gets,

even placed in the top 3 of a championship last year.

We have ladies racing both circuit and drags at Nomad Raceway..

I agree with Kim 100%. We tend to try fit too much in and not enough socialising. Running facebook Live has toned down the language a bit for drags but can still be an interesting enviroment !!!!.... We would welcome more women to race and enjoy the hobby no problem. But most dont want too.

Regards

Despite living in an almost full time slot car enviroment my wife shows no interest in racing but contributes greatly by tolerating me my obsession and usually puts on a top spread for the guys at proxies and making sure the tea and coffee stuff is ready on race nights here.

On "racy ladies" I remember a couple from the 70's, one a top racers wife and the other the raceway proprietors daughter who were pretty formidable racers. If they ever got someone between them at the drivers panel they would strike up a conversation mid race talking across the poor sod in an attempt to put them of their race. They tried it on me once and me being a bit of a have chat joined in. from that I learned to race with talk going on around me.

Ah there are some things about slot cars that i do remember well axman and hot pants was one of them , did have a German couple who popped up during one summer mid 60,s at one of the meetings and still not sure who had the hot pants on.

On the racing front my wife finished 2nd in the club championship in 65 to me and in the final the next week she took a dislike to my 330p3 and i can still see our club chairman Jack Penwill making a one handed save to his right as it sailed through the air at the bottoms bend , women were very competitive.

G'day Kim.

No Bob Sherry's missus Debbie in the tight Banana Racing T-shirt. and Leanne DeBrenni. Rick's other half was a bit before I got involved but she was still being talked about.

Ahh yes.. I remember Lens daughter.. she was a bit younger when I was around... I met her and her mum when I stayed at Len's place while building the 220 foot monster for him. Building that track nearly killed me dragging 3600 x 1800 sheets of chipboard up the stairs! No wonder I'm half deaf these days... it was all those laps with a router..they were long straights and big turns.

Well after 15+ years of trying to get Mrs Broke onto the track even just for a fun run without success, we had a race day at our place on Saturday and low and behold who grabs a car and controller after a bit of urging from a couple of the lads?
