Preamble
The intention of this proxy is to encourage imagination for designers, builders, modelers & tuners, it is not to say that RTR and kit builds are discouraged, they are more than welcome.

The Grp5 class was so unique and open that it had to appeal to every kid’s imagination of the possibilities of development, as such please imagine & create to your own ability and imagination.

  • Racing to commence 5th-6th July 2025. (All things being equal)
  • Cars to arrive no later than 1 week before to allow testing, warm-ups & repairs as required.
  • Any late arrivals will be included and raced in the state received.

Entry fee
$30 USD entry fee covers worldwide postage.
Entry fee is per person no matter how many cars entered.
Hosts are excluded entry fee for their own event.

Entries
Max three entries per person in whatever scale they like.

Classes
Individually raced in each 1:32 & 1:43

Classes are to be confirmed subject to number of entries and may be amalgamated if determined by the host.
1:43 & 1:32 will still be separated out though.
Possible classes include;

  • RTR
  • 3D Print
  • Scratch Built
  • Overall Beast of the Beast, if you will.

Races

Warm-up

Prior to the racing formal, all cars will have a prelim 10 lap hit-out to ensure there are no problems, these times will be posted but will not count towards placings.
Additional prelim laps may be undertaken for cars that require attention, each owner will be contacted for permission prior to any work being undertaken.
Any serious issues that require replacement of parts will be supplied by host, for a small fee if applicable and if available, otherwise car will be scratched if not repairable.
Host will endeavour to ensure all cars can compete if at all possible.

The series in Australia will include;
Time Trial - 20 Laps
There will be one experienced driver for all races

  • Each car will undertake 2 time trials over 20 laps (40 laps total).
  • 1x time trial for each of the two lane circuit.
  • The best lap for each lane will be averaged to provide the overall timed placings.
  • The overall fastest average time over the 20 laps will be used in case of tie with the fastest average given higher placing.
  • Points will be attributed to each cars based on time position.

Sprint Races - 10 Laps
There will be one experienced driver and one "P" plater for these races.
This will determine the ease of drive for each car.

  • This will be a knockout tournament with cars ranked for pairing based on TT times.
    • The top placed car will face the bottom placed car and so on down and up the placings.
    • Minor placings will be chosen by top loser facing bottom loser until complete.
      • I'll figure out full details once full field is confirmed.
  • Each car will be raced 4 times by two drivers, (Lane 1 Driver 1), (Lane 2 Driver 2), (Lane 1 Driver 2), (Lane 2 Driver 1).
  • Total time for the 4 races for each car will be combined to determine the overall placing for the knockout rounds.
  • Knockout rounds will follow the same formula.
  • Points will be attributed to each cars based on final race position.

Additional races
TBC dependent on available hosts - PM to let me know your interest.

RESULTS ARE FINAL
Points will collated from each competition, most points is overall winner.
Total time over all races will differentiate tied positions.

The Track(s)

Pine Grove Track

1728953429028-png.398069

This track is;

  • 19.4m long
  • Two lanes
  • MDF track
  • Coated with three coats of urethane.
  • Lanes are magna-braid.
  • Each lane has a spacing of 100mm except a portion of the return straight which narrows to 80mm.
  • The start finish straight is 4m long and the return straight is 3m.
  • Corners
    • Hairpin 150mm/250mm for 180 degrees
    • Right hand 300mm - 600mm for 180 degrees
    • Left hand 500/250/500 & 600/350/600 for 220 degrees
    • Sweepers 2000mm - 2500mm
    • Wobbly bit 1350mm - 1900mm (but are short so changes in direction will impact drive)
    • 2x crossovers All care will be taken by the drivers to ensure minimal damage to cars, but in racing this cannot be guaranteed.
Local rule is nose in front has right of way.

HOMOLOGATION

The Car

Any car that meets the following criteria.

  • They must have been able to meet the criteria of the FIA Group 1-4 classification from 1975 - 1982.
NB. It is up to the entrant to provide evidence.
  • Between 1972 and 1989 there must have been a minimum of 1000 1:1 touring cars or 400 1:1 grand touring cars produced each year.
    • I realise that the Group 5 ended in ’82 but some cars were continued in production, and it is too hard to break down the construction numbers for individual years. I’ll be working on total production numbers / years of construction to give average, if they meet the above criteria then “sweet as bro’.” Otherwise convince me.
    • As not all cars that ran were brand new allowance has been made for cars up to three years old at start of this class of racing.
      • For example: If the entire run of the car was manufactured between say 1967 & 1974 and met all other requirements then it is eligible.
  • They need not to have ever competed in a 4th Gen Group 5 competition, just need to meet the base criteria.

    Body
The FIA requirements state a maximum body width of 2000mm (62.5mm 1:32 or 46.5mm 1:43), excluding mirrors, side exhaust, door handles, but because the likes of sideways/racer take a liberty on scale,
  • the body width is limited to 65mm for 1/32, 50mm for 1/43.
  • To compensate for the oversized bodies the wheel track is restricted to the 1:1 requirement of 2000mm. Meaning that the track to the outer side of the wheels, front or rear, is restricted to 63mm 1:32 and 47mm 1:43.
  • Regardless of the above points - All sideways cars are valid but wheel track must be as close as practical to the above dimensions, this may mean narrower tyres.
  • No car will be disqualified, but a penalty will be imposed for indiscretions. This will be a pro-rata calculation based on average times of the rest of the field for each race.

Basic Requirements

  • The base body of the car must represent an actual car from that era.
  • The final shape of the car body is open so long as the modifications are additional to the base body and meet the dimension criteria.
  • No removal of the base body shape is allowed with the exception of original wheel arches and underbody areas to make way for guide or chassis supports.
  • Mirrors are optional.
  • No Vac formed
  • Tyres must be fully under the fenders. No tire may project beyond body work, as viewed from above
  • No guide must be visible from above
  • Driver must be visible and at least represented by a head, partial arms and steering wheel in part, make an effort, at least paint a helmet and overalls.
  • Windows must be translucent, substandard translucent ok so long as a driver is recognisable.
  • Headlights & tail lights must be represented but do not need to be illuminated.
  • Body must be min 1.0mm clear from track.

Tyres & Wheels

  • Tyres to be rubber of urethane only, NO silicon or foam.
  • The rear wheels cannot have a smaller diameter than the front wheels.
  • Low friction coating of front wheels is permitted such as CA glue or nail polish.
  • No treatment of rear tyres is permitted, any oozy/oily material will incur disqualification of the car “NO EXCEPTIONS”.
  • Rims must be from era and appropriate for car entered, scaled appropriately from 15” to 17” (1:32 12mm-13.5mm or 1:43 9mm-10mm).
  • Max width of tyres both front and rear is 10mm for 1:32 & 7.5mm for 1:43
  • Minimum width is 5mm for both scales

Chassis
Open, whatever you want to do subject to the following;

  • Min 1.5mm clearance from track to underside of chassis at lowest point
  • Bottom of motor to be min 1.5mm clear of track
  • Inline, angle or sidewinder is acceptable.
  • Guide must be able to make Scalextric R1 turns.
  • No guides greater than 6mm depth with braid.
  • No magnets

Motor

  • Home track(s) dudes - Recommend no greater than 21k but open.
  • Max current draw of 2 amps.
  • No capacitors or other electrical devices may be fitted to motor circuit
  • Open can is OK.

Livery
Livery is open to imagination but must adhere to the following;

  • Must have same number on
    • both passenger & driver doors
    • or may have number on bonnet in lieu of door numbers
  • Numbers must be individual no double ups (please advise number wanted ASAP so you do not miss out)
  • One small letter after number is fine to differentiate between cars.
  • Livery must be in keeping with the era ..... no google or facebook sponsors.
  • Sponsor need not have existed but must be era appropriate
    example.
    ZeGas Racing Supplies ---------------- fine
    ZeGas Computer Repairs -------------- not
  • No metallic paint body colours ..... excludes wheel rims.

Prizes
Prizes will be trophies only supplied by organiser for the following;

Overall placings 1st, 2nd, 3rd in each 1:32 & 1:43 class

Concours D'Elegance 1:32 & 1:43

Concours D'Imagination 1:32 & 1:43

Lantern Rouge 1:32 & 1:43

Additional prizes will be by donation (to be confirmed)

  • ZeGas changed the title to 2025 - Mad Man Motoring (Triple M) Proxy - Group 5 - 1:32 & 1:43

Well done ZeGas.

You can count me in preferably in scratch-built category. Will advise after I have read your rules.

Good on you Charles,

Just a note, car numbers must be individual so if you have a favourite get it in.

***** Driver list updated *****

Note:

On slotforum it was asked if the BMW M1 was eligible, I have considered this.

Although there were only 399 made prior to Lamborghini going under, the M1 is a classic car and had every intention of making it to the GR5 comp, and also given it is only 1 short it is allowed.

Welcome aboard fiery1.

whatever you like.

Mix and match how you like, can be straight out of the box, can be balsa, styrene, 3d printed, brass, cut and paste, origami. Anything, just not vac formed.

So long as it meets the basic requirements let your imagination run wild.

I was thinking of doing a mini for a laugh, but I think the wheelbase would be too short for the end width.

I should add that RTR is ready to race but that doesn't mean it needs to stay as unpacked, it can be modified and tuned to suit.

You can use an RTR body and scratch build or 3d print the chassis, this would be classed as scratch built.

Hi ZeGas.

3 questions and 1 request.

1. Track has Magna Braid so is there restriction on magnetic force of motor. Do not think this is mentioned.

2. Are brushless motors allowed?

3. Is the sideways Nissan Skyline Turbo C Group 5 car eligible? A car list would be useful.

4. Can we have an email address so payment of entry fee can be made via Paypal (send PM if you wish).

Regards Charles Le Breton (charlesx)

Charles, please see below.

  1. 1. I have restricted the chassis clearance to 1.5mm to counter this.
Tested with coreless motors and found to have some, but little effect.
I have edited the rules to state that motor must have 1.5mm clearance as well.
  2. Brushed, brushless & coreless motors are all acceptable.
  3. a. 5th Gen (C210) & 6th Gen (R30) Skylines are both valid cars.
    b. I don't want to provide a restrictive list, I have given the guidelines above regarding homologation hoping that someone will find a wacky car out there to convert, such as a Russian Gaz24 Volga or a CX Citroen, you get the drift.
  4. Payment details and postage address, I'll send to each entrant through PM.

Thanks ZeGas.

Got PM ok.

Was not thinking of a restrictive list. Just some that are eligible. Might encourage people to enter. Surely a good start would be any Sideways Group 5 cars??? Think there are also Scale Auto and Fly models. There is also Munter if he is still moulding. Clearly Pattos bodies and like are not allowed. C Le B

So far 4x 1:32 & 5x 1:43, a nice balance.

Charles,

Any car that has been produced specifically as a Group 5 slot car qualifies so all the sideways/racer cars are good to go.

I got an email the other day from Pendle's showing the release of Carrera Lancia Beta Monecarlo's in various livery, these also qualify.

Porsche 934, 935, 924, 928

BMW 320, 1602, 2002. BMW M1 does qualify even though there were only 399 made not 400, but the intention was there.

Renault 5, Fiat Panda, VW Golf, they were eligible for Group 1 so can be eligible for Group 5.

Mk III & Mk IV Cortina's, Escorts are not eligible.

If you want to get local VB, VC & VH commodores or XC to XE Falcons depending with your preference. Or even a CL or CM series Valiant are all eligible, but being a wide car already I doubt it would be much fun to add tiny flares to them.

But then a Holden Camira, or HC Viva might be a laugh.

Pretty much any car constructed between the years nominated would be eligible.

Hi again ZeGas.

This is something like I have planned but I have no idea of livery yet. The kit is the Turbo C Group 5 but not sure about the other,

Hopefully something garish with perhaps a NZ theme although not aware Group 5 saloons have ever raced locally. Perhaps the late Denny Hulme or Greg Murphy or one of the many other Kiwis competing overseas had a go.

Looks awesome, I'm sure you'll come up with something great.

How about a Georgie Pie sponsor.

Remember, this is pure fantasy, it does not in any way have to represent a past team or driver.

Do not worry ZeGas. I will work out something with a NZ theme. If I can connect to a NZ driver that would be a bonus. Have never had the Nissan so I thought something different would be good. Not sure if I will buy just body or total white kit. Thanks for help. C Le B

Notification of possible conflict of interest.
I set the rules but have now thought of the third car I'd like to build.
Would like outside input based on the rules above.

Given that a VW Karmann Ghia was built between 1955 & 1975.
Just scraping into the lower end of homologation, does it qualify?
