3d Printing

Recommended Posts

Hi All.

Thinking of 3d printing bodies and chassis if possible, but have a few questions.

1. What would be the 3d printer to use for doing this?

2. Where would I have to go to get plans/programs for bodies and chassis to load, just looking at 1/32 for the moment?

3. Would bodies be designed for particular supplier if I can not get chassis plans, eg Sideways,Thunderslot, Slotit etc?

1. As with most things your budget guides your decision on type and make, i've had both plastic (PLA) and resin printers, i found from the outset even though the resin, once dialed in, gives you far better results i found it very messy, this was a few years ago so it might have changed but i went with an upgrade on the PLA print side, latest one i have is the Creality K1 Max, print speed is good and so is the detail, not as good as resin but for cars that will be going on the track they're fine.

2. You can download the STL (program) file from a few different places, some are free like "thingiverse" where you can type in slotcar and go through the hundreds of not only cars but track accessories as well, The 3D printable Shop ...  https://3dprintable.shop/page/2/?count=36&s&post_type=product&product_cat=0  has hundreds of different cars and trucks to download but these you need to buy, but once you buy the file it's yours forever, if you wait for them to be on special you can get them from 5 - 7.50 Euro, normally 10 - 15 euro, the bodies of the Jags and Healey all came from this place

3. As said bodies can be found from both sites mentioned, thingiverse has a few different chassis to download but most are specific to a model, you can always use "tinkercad" this program allows you to design 3D files that can be printed or you could just use the Slot-it RTR chassis tinkercad and the slicer program that come with whatever printer you get allows you change different dimensions of the body you are about to print i.e. keep the wheelbase and height but make it a couple of millimetre wider so the chassis fits under the guards.

Hope this helps

Thanks.

Seems to be a little more to it than what I thought.

Always is, but once you've "played" with it for a while it gets easier

I already know that I don't want to print my own, but I am interested in the range of bodies available as 3d printable files.  I'm a Rambler/AMC fan (amongst other brands as well) and I've seen the files available online that might never have been made into plastic model kits.  The possibility of getting something rare or unique is what attracts me.  But my question is, are there "professionals" out there who would print a body I want as a service, rather than having to do it myself?

Keiran

Look up John from NBS 3d Printed R/C & Slot Car Customs on Facebook

He has a quite a range of files available so he may have what you want already or if not I am sure he will work with you to source the file.
