Last year they announced the release of a HQ Monaro and I couldn’t resist ordering one. It is based on the Bob Jane race car complete with side pipe and mini lite wheel inserts. The only thing I could complain about is it didn’t have the fender flares. No problem though, it is easy enough to shape them with some putty.

Once shaped the car was undercoated. It needs more coats than recommended though to fill the printed finish. I would say I put about 6 coats of Tamiya undercoat, alternating between white and grey so I could see where I was at when sanding between coats.

Once done I went to the body colour. Now I am using an airbrush, amateurly I might add, I was able to source the correct Tangerine Orange from SMS paints. SMS being an all Australian company are making more Aussie car colours all the time so it makes it pretty easy to source airbrush ready paints in correct colours. A few coats and the car was ready for window surrounds and Patto’s decals. I should have ordered these minus the body colour but at the time I didn’t think too hard about it. Anyway a little extra work cutting them out and they came out ok.

For the interior Bob had a cream colour so I had to mix a few paints to get that done along with Bob and some gauges from a Patto decal sheet of various gauges.

Wheels are Slot.it air rims on the back and Slot.it plastic wheels on the front. I used a Slot.it V12 standard 23k motor so I could get a feel for how the TA71 chassis setup would compare to a Slot.it.

All complete and the car was extremely light, around 68 grams. It was really too light on my Policar plastic track, no magnets by the way, so I added some weight. There aren’t too many places to put weight in this chassis but it helped. I must say though the chassis really is too flexible for my liking and I am probably going to either make a new chassis altogether or glue some brass in it to stiffen it up.

Anyway the car is complete and I am happy with the result. It looks great with my other Improved Touring cars from the era.

The #23 Gordon Smee Monaro is a Pattos vac. formed body, the #1 Gene Welch Corvette a modified Revell and the Peter Crick Torana is a Scalextric. The latter is the best handling Scalex Torana I have, it's an absolute weapon.

Back in the day, the '71 - '73 bodied Mustangs were considered too heavy and too big to be competitive. Those that did make the track I always felt made for rather handsome race-cars.

Warren Tope ran the #31 and alternated between the Trans Am and IMSA, the latter series allowing much wilder body modifications. I sorta cherry picked a livery that is somewhere in between both series and he seemed to have had a revolving door of sponsors.

The #60 according to Australian Muscle Car magazine was race prepared in British Columbia by John Hall's Car Craft and raced in Canada before the owner shipped it to Australia.

It finished 10th. at the 1973 Sandown round of the A.T.C.C. then spent the rest of the '70's being club raced and going through several hands. It was then restored back to road trim including conversion to right hand drive.

The #3 was a Lindburg kit that was made as a drag car so I simply made it a fantasy speedway sedan using up decals from the parts bin.

We allow kitbashed / scratchbuilt into all classes as long as they are not class killers, Pattos vac. formed bodies and decals, the Falcon is sitting on an NSR chassis and the Camaro on a shortened wheelbase Scalextric chassis.

This started life out as a black body with no decals, I've added front and rear lights using white and red LED's, some resistors and a couple of diodes, used this type of lighting before to repair SCX cars, not my idea on how to do the lighting, found it elsewhere but you can light a shedload of cars for bugger all. I gave the body a prime, white undercoat and a final coat of BMW 1988 white from the Powerplus paint range. The decals were from Pattos, peel and stick type and the car was also given a couple of clear coats. Still needs some new rubber too.

Just using up that mountain of spares I seemed to have accumulated, bodies are snap tite kits except the Falcon. A mate who I started racing slot cars with way back in 1966 moved to the far NSW north coast, a Scalextric set minus the Torana came up on his local auction site so he grabbed it for me. The body was knocked around a bit and every magnet pocket in the chassis had an amazingly strong magnet fitted, with the amount of yellow paint scuffed on it, not hard to guess the colour the Torana was!

The Austin 1800 is a work in progress, Pattos vac. formed body on a Scalextric chassis. It's intended to be one of the works cars for the 1968 London - Sydney Marathon, drivers Evan Green, George Shepheard and Jack Murray. Apparently the car had a trick rear seat that could fold out as a camp bed and since 'Gelignite' Jack was the eldest of the crew he is having a breather on the bed after a strenuous opening driving stint . A mate is going to print the fine details such as number plates and the wording 'Daily Express, Sydney Telegraph' that go above and below the cars rally number. Sadly his dog just died and he is understandably upset so I don't want to nag him at the moment.

In 1966 Frank Matich won just about every race he entered with his Elfin T-400, usually called the Elfin Traco-Oldsmobile. At the end of the year he sold it, less engine and gearbox to Sydney racer Niel Allen. To me, the most visually striking part of these big Elfins are the headlight pods (aka Horns) that followed the line of the front guards and ended up protruding either side of the radiator. There was a gentle, graceful curve under the pods eventually lining up with the bottom leading edge of the front wheel arch.

The new team found their car felt unstable at high speed with serious front end lift and so removed the headlight pods, recessing the lights into a new panel flush with the radiator inlet. They also cut vents at the top rear of the front guards to allow air to escape from behind the wheels. This is the version I did.

There was a bit of messing about, cutting off the headlights and making up the new panel but looks ok from a distance. Rattle can paints and stickers from the pile although the #2 were from a sheet I must have bought way back in the very early '70's and had to use very hot water to get them to release from the backing paper.

The class has been successful so much so that now all our classes allow kitbashed / scratchbuilt models as long as they fit the class framework, now we are having Valiant Chargers and early Skylines in Classic Touringcars, Brooklands Bentleys and Alfetta's in GP Heroes, Bristol 450's and Cunninghams in Classic Sportscars. Great stuff, breaks up the same old same old.

Over the past few years I have really taken to building these Humpies. In my defense a couple of years ago I was diagnosed with a serious, inoperable heart condition. Maybe my subconscious kicked in and figured if I fall off the perch its easier for the family to shift completed cars rather than trays of spare parts .

Have tried to capture how the class looked racing back in the day, I'm a firm believer in the one meter rule, if I'm happy how they look on the track that's close enough for me. Thanks for looking.

The 1:1 scale Monaro was thought lost but was found and underwent a total refurbishment several years ago. Pattos vac. formed body on Scalextric Camaro chassis.

The Mustang *I think* is in it's original livery when built and raced by Paul Fahey. Had a long and successful career but probably better known in it's electric blue / PDL livery.

Red Dawson's Camaro is one of my all time favourite colour schemes. Not exact but close enough for me.

The kit contains a 3D printed body and parts and is pretty sharp in detail. It comes with a chassis that accepts Slot.it, Olifer and most other pods. I like the Olifer ones as they have adjustable axle height.

The Granada wheel arches look different but it won't matter as they will be getting flares. The cente mould will need altering amongst other things.

The Falcon profile has a flatter bonnet/guard that angles up to sit a little higher than the side window frames. This meant I had to cut the bonnet and guard join from the windscreen to about halfway along and raise it a couple of mm. I then added a piece of styrene sheet on each guard and back filled it with Araldite as it is nice and strong. I am going to need to do the same for the boot as well. I also marked out where the flares will sit approximately anyway. The wheels are just to get an idea of how it will all sit but seem pretty spot on. The Ninco rears are also very similar to the actual race car although it has standard road nuts rather than a centre lock hub.

It had chrome plastic windows all round so I had to make up a windscreen but left the rear one in place. Rattle can paint on a Scalextric chassis,

decal from the spares pile with a bit of red paint to fill the gaps.
