Drag Racing.

A smaller flat track suitable for scales from 1/24th to 1/32nd and 1/43rd.

A group of us had the privilege of testing Ricks Scorpius System at his place last Friday night

The system works great .... the ability to stand or walk anywhere and not have controller cables to trip over or to restrict you is the best idea

The controllers are very light and smooth and you can also tweak them, very quickly via the computer, to suite individual requirements, with fine tuning of the brakes and throttle curve

As stated before .... each car has it's own ID number matched to it's own controller

The brakes are adjustable to 100% (obvious) but there is also a handbrake, if you like, as well which will stop the car instantly .... when you get used to just "dabbing" the button, you can go realy deep into corners .... with a little practice .... it'll shaves tenths off your lap times

The track was only running at 11 volts but the NSR Moslers we were using were very quick, even though we were running without magnets

Not being digital people, lane changing was a bit of a daunting prospect, but with a bit of practice we managed to work out the system very quickly and lane swapping and overtaking was the norm by the nights end

This is lane changing at speed ...... flat out down the front straight, and staying on to boot

Having more than one car on each lane takes a bit of getting used to, but once done it makes for some very close and exciting racing

Scorpius can also run analog cars as well ..... Rick took about 5 min to change the system over so that you can your analog cars on the track using the same Scorpius controller, which makes the system adaptable to any track, analog or digital

The ability to walk around to different positions on the track all while still driving is a great idea as is being able to sit in your nice comfy chair, you can drive the car from another room if you want, the only thing that stops you is line of sight, but that's why they invented video cameras. Also you no longer have to be held up waiting for the cancer club to come back to start a race, close the door and they can look through the window and puff away to there (soon to expire) hearts content.

We managed to finally get across to see Mat at the Slot Car Factory at Taren Point.

The Slot Car Factory has been open since October 2009 and specialise in 1/32 scale slot cars for the home hobby racing enthusiast.

The shop at present has 4 tracks for hire including a 6 lane replica of Oran Park Raceway that measures 26 metres in length as well as a Carrera Digital track

Club racing is on every Friday night and we were lucky enough to join in with the regulars for a great nights racing.

The Slot Car Factory also has kids/beginners racing on Sundays once a month.

A good selection of cars and spares available

As well as plenty of room for those all important repairs during racing

We finally managed to get back to Xtreme Trax down at Unit 1/60 Marshall St Dapto, to see Alec again and to catch up with him, and to show anyone in the area see what they are missing out on if they haven't made the trip to Xtreme Trax yet.

With 5 different and challenging road circuits to choose from, as well as a 55ft drag strip, there's something for everyone

The Drag strip has proven very popular with younger competitors

There is something going on all the time, every Monday night from 7 till 9pm they have the 1/32 racing, which is very well attended with average 24 racers, who choose different cars to race each 6 week series.

Every Thursday afternoon the local high school kids attend and race under the guise of sport it is a well organised event with active participation from the teachers and an average of 22 kids from 12.45 till 2.15pm, Thursday night from 7 till 9pm they have the 1/24 scale racers who race plaffit and mjk chassis cars.

Every Friday night from 6 till 8pm they run the kids (under 16) racing with dads as well, on average we get 20 racers and have great fun with racing being open to all cars but run under trackmate system races.

Saturday and Sunday are general public entry and birthday party bookings.

The upstairs party room which is self contained, with ladies and gents toilets, kitchen area with fridge microwave and hot dog machine, in the main race area they have tables and chairs for up to 24 people

All in all they have the perfect family and serious racers facility with a good range of cars and spare parts for all the major manufacturers

All that's missing is a Rally track .... but i'm told there might be one in the pipe line

We ran manual laps with 2 ghost cars that change lane automatically at random. Anti Collision was activated.

The NSR cars ran over 150,000 laps over 6 days without a single problem. Well done NSR.
