Wire Dia For Controller

Rob

Recommended Posts

Hey guys,

Ive decided to build another diode controller but I have a question for the electronics gurus.

What dia wire do I need as a minimum to carry the current. Typically we run RTR from SCX to NSR cars nothing really super duper.

Looking at what is inside the parma economy handle its about 1mm dia wire.

I have some .7mm dia wire in rolls would this be enough?

Im bored out of my brain after having a month off work due to an infected leg and need something to do!

Here are some general guidelines AWG vs. current

There is a trade off between size and flexibility. We rarely see more than 2 amps on the power supply so I chose .75mm as it is what a computer power supply lead is. Easy to find, 1m long. just cut the plugs off.

Inside my Parma the small wire between wiper and chassis gave up. I used a piece of solder wick.

Getting the resistance as low as possible is important. Shorter is better. Mine is long so I can sit down with a beer.

As you are laid up and talking about flexibility:

Tommy Cooper went to a yoga teacher and asked "Can you teach me to do the splits?"

Teacher: "How flexible are you?"

TC: "Well I'm free on Tuesdays"

Rob: try and find some very flexible cable, I use cable that is normally used for meter leads,I think is has 75 strands and is 2.5mm area.

The 0.7 diameter seems too light to me and probably too stiff.

DSE used to carry "ultra flex" cable that was great for controllers.

Armchair Racer also carry great very flexible silicone wire in various colors, expensive BUT worth it.

Yes I agree, Many of the available Silicon variants are also Oxygen Free, which Is a very good thing, especially running DC current.

Have a check at your Local Electrical wholesaler or even perhaps a Live entertainment Rental company especially Lighting Hire companies, as they Invariably use some Very suitable Silicon Mains cable that is Both Flexible and of more than enough in both strand count and cross sectional area.

Anything from .75mm squared should do the trick.

:D
