I have really enjoyed having my little routed timber track but it is quite small so I thought it was time to get a bit more serious and build a new and bigger track.

This track is to be housed in the garage at my office so I had a lot more room to play with. The plan is for a 6m x 2.4m base that will ultimately be stored on a pulley and winch system. It will go above where the panel van is at the moment.

Rob performed his CAD wizardry again and came up with this.

The running direction will be left to right along the main straight with piece 7 passing under piece 10.

24.8 metre lane length, 100 mm spacing. 12mm MDF with a 9mm deep slot and a 3/16th x .65mm rebate for the braid.

I got the track pieces CNC routed by Allboard Distributors in Hallam. In a week or so they delivered all the track pieces nicely routed.

The cost for this was $540 including the MDF (6 sheets) and delivery. Plus they left a sheet of 3mm and a sheet of 12mm that they used as packing. I don’t have a router or the bits or the skill or the time so for me it was a no brainer. I am keeping a detailed list of the cost of the build in case anyone might be interested.

Materials and parts are coming from everywhere.

Braid and Trackmate timing from Slot Race Shop (SlotsNZ) in NZ.

Power supplies from Mobile Raceways.

Controllers from Armchair Racer.

Double sided tape from Complete Tape Solutions in Sydney.

So today I started building. A bit of clean up was required to get the dust out of the slot.

Track pieces undercoated. The second picture shows some relative size of the pieces . The horseshoe shaped piece next to the petrol bowser is the corner at the end of the main straight (piece #3). The large corner is against the wall.

Next step is to paint the pieces then build a frame and start to put it all together.

so I had a lot more room to play with

Yes Alan we believe that is the reason! Nothing to do with having time when things are quiet to tune cars! :P

Great start and looks like being a very nice track, good choice of Trakmate,it is a good program for organising racing and timing. Great for proxy races!

Please keep posting pics of the progress.

Slo1quick came down yesterday and helped get the major part of the construction done.

The track will probably end up be winched up to the roof for storage so the base needed some real support.

100 x 50 x 6mm aluminium angle for "chassis rails".

It all starts.

Legs attached

Cross members in place and timber frame going on top.

Making sure it fits OK.

Joining the pieces.

All joined up.

Next on the agenda, set the elevations, fill the bits that need filling then finish the painting.

I have to say a really big thank you to Slo1quick for all his time, help and engineering skills.

Good to see it coming together Alan, well done !

This track has really fast sections that'll produce some serious offs. It will take a some getting used to for consistant fast laps. Its a great design!

The wonky legs unscrew for when the table gets hoisted to the rafter/joists. One person can easily move this track around on the casters. And it is a large track !

Keep up the good work and keep the pics coming. Cant wait to give it a blast !

Awesome track.... can't believe it was $540 CNC routed.

I know. I think it is ridiculously cheap. For that amount of money I could not even try do it. And that was delivered. And I got all the cut out bits as well. Someone I know might use those as guides (like an MDF Lufs tape) for his new track.

Plenty of clearance for some truck Alan ;) Starting to look very good.

110mm. Thank you for your advice. :)

Now there's an idea !

Coming along nicely Alan. Elevations are looking good !

Ready for braid eh ?

Everything works.

All lanes braided and working ok.

IMG_4519.jpg

I just put up some temporary barriers just to have a play.

Timing works fine.

IMG_4520.jpg

Dunno why I was worried about the wiring. It's simple really.

IMG_4526.jpg

Now with everything working OK I'll tidy up all the wiring and make some better driver stations, then put up some more attractive barriers.

I ran a couple of cars and found some really tricky parts of the lap that bring you undone. Should make for some interesting racing.

Alan: Are you using it for next weeks Challenge!!! :)

No. We'll be using the little track at Cape. This one will host the first round of the Tasman.

Have you run very many laps using the timing?

Not many but everything seems to be working fine. I ran in both directions and had no issues. I still have to fit a relay.

More running during lunch time Monday and Tuesday and Wednesday!!!

Now that's not a bad idea. Gives the long lunch new meaning.
