I Am The Walrus
Had a practice in this room a while back. Now the bride has relented and its my toy room. Not big, but the idea is for a single lane rally style with elevations. Under window (left) allows for about 1.9m, side (top of picture) about 2.1m & next to doorway (right) is 1.6m to allow for entry to room. Longest reach is about 900mm to allow for marshaling. Basic guideline framework shows long climbs (only 2 shown) there will be 5 in all of varying heights to the highest point in right hand corner (not shown) where it will descend fairly sharply via 4 more hairpins and end in a corkscrew to the flat 'plains' area on the vacant land. ...and yes, she's letting me keep the floral curtain. DRMF1
Wow, with that sort of elevation you should be able to fit in quite a track. Look forward to the updates. Dan
I Am The Walrus
Just realised I was running two build pages - my bad. Under coat day today - defines things a bit more. Hopefully the bride will be distracted by the paint on the curtain so she doesn't notice what's on the carpet. A bit rough round the edges but will be touched up later on with a brush in the hard to get at bits. Areas not painted will be covered later on by beautifully crafted rock faces I expect. I Am The Walrus
Oh, the joy that is a sample pot from Bunnings, a $5 80mm sponge roller & that first splash of colour. Two coats of sealer/undercoat, fill the holes & gaps, a bit of a sand & on with the first coat. Bit darker than I was expecting but still have a fair bit left so will tone it down a bit with some white for the next coat. The bits that aren't track will be a forest green to start with followed by track-side detail. Edited January 16, 2016 by I Am The Walrus Quote A wise man once said... munter
Good stuff Walrus...I have a single lane rally style track myself. If I might make one suggestion?.....trim down the height of the crash barriers to about 25mm.....what do you think? Quote John Warren Slotcars are my preferred reality
I Am The Walrus
25mm? Ok. Reason? I was a bit concerned about offs. (they are currently about 60 to 65mm above the track surface) I'd love to see photos if you have them. Track length? (mine is 21.9m I think) Quote A wise man once said... munter
The reason being visual.... My track is 14,5m lap length. I went looking for pictures but??? I will take a couple and post them later. Quote John Warren Slotcars are my preferred reality
branco
Could you use perspex for the crash barriers? Seems a shame to hide your excellent creation. munter
I cannot find the pics or be stuffed taking more and uploading them but here is a link to my track in the NZ http://www.auslot.com/forums/index.php?/topic/17987-would-sir-like-to-try-something-in-beige/ Quote John Warren Slotcars are my preferred reality
I Am The Walrus
@ Munter. Yes, I have seen the beige beast pics before. I assume you've had no reason to provide more barriers than you already have? @ Branco. I've seen perspex on other tracks and while its a good idea I'm just using what I have on hand. Also I'm expecting to have to hide a few trackside imperfections which I expect the barriers to hide. That said, I will drop the height a bit though. Quote A wise man once said... I Am The Walrus
Grey is the new black. Thought the first coat, (deep charcoal) was just too dark. I figured adding a bit of white would do the trick. Possibly a bit lighter than I was imagining but looks ok. The ultimate effect I'm trying to achieve is possibly along these lines. I Am The Walrus
In my eagerness to getting to the "laying the copper tape" stage, I omitted the "remember to paint the inside of the slot" stage. Consequently, I am now in the process of painting 21.9m of 3mm wide 6mm deep raw mdf slot with a 1.5mm brush. Lets just call progress sedate. Quote A wise man once said... miveson
Why do you paint the inside of the slot? It's a single lane track? Perhaps I'm missing something but I thought the only reason to paint the inner slot was to give a difference colour for multi-lane tracks. I Am The Walrus
It was raw mdf. Looked a bit shabby next to the finished track. All good now. Finished today. ZeGas
I found a good way to do it is to go to the chemist and buy a 10mm syringe, fill it with paint and inject it into the slot (no masking required), then use you artists brush to push the paint through the slot, go slowly so that it doesn't overtop the slot onto the tape, works really well and gives the slot a good soaking. kalbfellp
I actually redid all the slots in my track over the holidays, used a syringe and taped a brush onto the syringe, doing both in one go. I used Fluro paint for lane colors, but still some guys can't see the colours! Quote Phil https://www.hobartminiaturecarclub.com/ Email
I Am The Walrus
Thought of the syringe method too. Thank you for the suggestion. In the end I masked the one lane of tape I'd done and was able to get good coverage without having to be too careful. All advice is gretefully received thanks lads. Quote A wise man once said... I Am The Walrus
About to run out of copper tape (more on the way) but had to have a bit of a trundle around the 2/3 of the track that is complete. The joy of the first drive. A few areas where cars bottom out as I have a bit too much variation in height so a bit of fine tuning to come. Quote A wise man once said... I Am The Walrus
Not sure if this will work - first attempt at posting video. A new roll of copper tape has arrived so was able to complete my circuit, Very tentative driving as I don't have my barriers up on the hairpins so a little hairy on the elevations. Also, filming with phone while driving was a bit hard. Landscaping will be the next step but I did enjoy the first few laps. Edited February 1, 2016 by I Am The Walrus Quote A wise man once said...
