Track Progress... Been A While

Just a couple of new pics of my current track. I say current because we move house in a couple of weeks, and while the track is coming, it won't be staying this layout for too much longer. The new garage is massive, so track will be going from 3 tables of 6x4 to 5, giving me a footprint of 20x6ft. Pics are a bit grainy, sorry.

Here's an overall. My plan is as follows, I'll try to explain as best as I can using the below pic as a guide.

100_5229.jpg

The top two tables remain as is. The two new tables will be at bottom of pic. On the current bottom table the left 180 turn remains also. The bridge however will turn left not right (in relation to the pic) and swing on to the new table in an 'S' series. On to the second new table and a 90 right down the width of the table sweeping on to the front straight and joing the original straight which now has the start finish line on the inner new table. New infield will be made up of pits with refuel sensors. Well that's the plan anyway...

Sound good Schuey. You still having a squeeze to upset Joe and Co? ;)

What's with the three Fords on the track? Not game to let a Holden amongst them eh?

I can't believe that I wanted to grow up

Mel, do you remember the following quotes from yourself? now that you have run, your thoughts? (last quote not yours, BMR's)

You still having a squeeze to upset Joe and Co?

Well done, love racing lines but I guess too many and placed on every corner would create havoc with inexperienced racers, which we all seem to get from time to time (me included)!

squeezes on a track but in the first corner mmm lots of crash restarts ?

We only had one restart all night, and it had noithing to do with the squeeze. There were only a couple of crashes at the hairpin.

The first corner was my favourite corner on the track. You could hit it much faster than you would expect.

  • 2 weeks later...

Have my weekend planned out now. My new materials for the track extension got delivered today. Bunnings tomorrow morning for hardware, table build and possible start on routing. Have amended design from two table extension to one, still enough to fit in pits. Have already marked out new section.

Thanks goes out to K Rudd, and I hope everyone now feels a little stimulated!

:D Typically the slot car bug bites again - the more shed space you have the larger the track gets . I was posting earlier today about the advantages tape can have when it comes to quick cheap modifications to a track and you have illustrated it well . quick corners change with some bog and its done . Now I see a nice extension to make the track bigger , when you finally have the layout you want to keep will you braid it ? Looks like you will have a very nice track layout from the pics . Big long straights and also some nice twisty bits to test you and the lads . Good to see the first corner squeeze is working well with no pile ups . The squeezes add some extra challenge to your racing as well because the drivers will need to think about how and where they are going to put on a passing manouvre - will you use blocking tactics on the kids ? ;) Dads gotta stay in front somehow huh . Does the wifey get into the racing ?

Re the wife has been crook - 1 old quote "laughter is the best medicine."

PS

The hardest part about making the track larger is telling the missus her car lives in the driveway permanently because the track is more important than her car. :)

Got a fair whack done today. Table built, track section removed and pits and lanes marked for routing. The young bloke cracked it when he saw me pull the old section off, so I have to get my butt in gear to finish it off. My priority will be to get it to running stage, the work on the pit changers.

I'm not going to braid it, will always keep it tape. At 5V for the kids, no problem staying in front! Wife doesn't get involved apart from saying that's nice dear when I do something new!

My wife's car still fits on the other side, so we both win.

I can totally relate to the wife saying " Thats nice dear " :P:P They ( wives ) try to sound sincere but the rolling eyes give them away .....at least the're happy to mostly leave us alone in the shed to play until the rubbish needs to be put out or something like that.

Have to say both squeezes were no problem at all. When I first looked at the track I thought "here we go" and felt there should be a staggered start (like one of the Adelaide tracks I had a run on) to avoid the carnage at the end of pit straight. We got more carnage on Bo and Joe's new tracks at the 1st corner.

I'm not a quick learner on new tracks but I seemed to go OK on your track with both squeezes and he track in general.

Looking foward to the pit entry construction.

Mine doesn't mind me doing anything with the cars and track (when I get a chance) as she says I'm more relaxed then.

What she does get toey about is me heading off to "Mr Personality" (Armchair) and the following dent in the credit card. Quite often omes with me to keep me in check.

I can't believe that I wanted to grow up

Made a start on the routing today. Finished off the bridge section, utilising some of the old section and grafting on some off cut I had kicking around from the original build which I hoarded with me through three different houses. I routed the main straight and have just about finished the pit area, though I don't have pics of the latter.

Tomorrow I should get the pits finished and may make a start on the new table.

I'm also planning on moving the driver's station panel a table to the left so its in front of the pits, but the start finish will remain where it is.

Now I can say I have just about finished the pit area, need to tidy up a small run with a blade and route the turn in for the middle bay.

DSCF6711.jpg

The run off the bridge is complete, and have marked out the definitive layout for the new section, including the pit entry.

Tomorrow hope to make a start on the the corners.

Ummm... hold the phone. Fix small run with blade, check. Re route turn in for middle bay... how about fill in the second attempt and go for a third! My re route was pretty much the same as the first attempt. Oh well, all the rest of the routing is complete at least.

Looks great! Are those fold up legs available individually and attached to your track or are you just sitting your layout on top of a few fold up tables?

The fold up legs are as a pair from Bunnings. They are attached to the table, and the track is fixed to each table. The whole thing had to able to be demountable for moving. Its now four tables of 6x4 ft.

Some more progress shots. Undercoat and first coat of chalkboard paint are down, as are the lane colours. Have put the track barriers up and relocated the drivers station panel. The pits are well, giving me the ... pits. I had a fourth attempt at the middle bay and its still too shallow. As the car turn in, the guide goes to the other lane. May have toputty it and just try to use a blade for the slot and ditch the router altogether. Also have to redo the turn in for the first bay, same problem there too.
