ZeGas
Hi all, After querying a few months back whether anyone has tried coreless motors before I got more and more curious. I was also curious about being able to make a 1:43 car that would be able to compete with a tuned 1:32. In other words a competitive 1:43 race car, not a modified toy car. So over the past few months I have experimented with that idea and after a number of iterations and improvements have completed a ground up build of a Lancia 037 that I hope is quite competitive. Now, I'm not the worlds greatest slot car driver but using myself as the driver to compare between cars I think it will at least be apples and apples. So onwards.... The chassis, pod & wheels are all my own design and are 3D printed in resin. The body is off the WWW and is 3D printed in resin, file modified to add body mounts. The tyres are my own urethane compound and are shore A25. I tried A35, A30 & A27, am about to try A20 Motor is coreless rated at 12v with no load at 18k, tested with no load this particular one was 17k so not bad. Guide is Slotting Plus universal. Pod is suspended with soft springs Gears are nylon 8/15. Axles 2mm, rear is flanged ball bearing. Front end height adjustable suspended height is also adjustable by about 1.5mm which obviously alters the suspension as well soft to hard. I probably should have cleaned it a bit before I took some photos. The results on a Scalextric track coated with Cabots polyurethane are quite impressive. The track has one set of every radius curve and a wobbly bit. Initial results on the 20m track were in the mid 8's, by the time I improved and tuned they were down to a constant 10 lap average of 7.1 with fastest laps at 6.8. To compare, the latest Scaley Torana with magnets is doing 10 lap average 6.2 and a tuned Slot.it 956 10 lap average 6.8-6.9. It is very smooth and quiet to drive but does lack a bit of torque so braking isn't dead stop, but I like that personally. Conclusion is that I think it is possible to create a 1:43 scale race car. Vinno
That’s impressive. I didn’t read if you have a magnet in the car like the Scaley Torana. If not even more impressive.
ZeGas
No mag Vinno, just a little Tungsten weight around and behind the motor. About 3g from memory. ZeGas
Well it gets better, I altered my tyre compound, redesigned and fitted a custom guide and shortened the gears. The tryes are trued but not glued so you can see gaps around the rim and a slight tear. Now pulling a best lap of 6.188 and a 10 laps average of 6.36 seconds. Cannot believe what I am getting out of this. This was a quick setup as well, cannot wait to set some new tryes on it, and true & glue them this time. This one under a Stratos body. Vinno
The chassis looks like it has a nice low centre of gravity.
