i bourght a power base, transformer and 2 new controllers a few weeks ago and it wasnt till today that i used the new controllers.. well straight away i could smell smoke and after 4 secs see where it was comming from the hand controller!!.. i dont remember smoke comming from my original controllers but it was a while ago but is this normal???

the reason i used the new controllers is that the original ones were like a switch.. either all or nothing!!! The purple controller used to be firly linear while the yellow one was a bit like a 2 speed switch but the low speed u could lap in a ok time and not deslot but now ANY controller is on or off! i dont know why and would very much appricate any help to sort this problem out.. it was ok yesterday but today its gone nuts :o !

i have two power packs and scaley sport track power straight.. i have checked to make sure that the switch is in the duel power supply posisition

Cheers

It's not odd for new controllers to smell funny for a while but smoke would be a bit of a worry. Did the controller feel overly warm?

Part of the problem could be that either one or both of your power packs are DC. Sport powerbases are set up for AC power. Or perhaps one of your controllers is a non-sport unit.

If both are AC packs then I guess it's another problem somewhere inside the powerbase.

I'm not a big fan of the sport powerbase :o . I had 2 for my fourlane that fried themselves. I ended up wiring up my own drivers stations with separate power to each lane, a 3a fuse in each lane and a polarity switch for reversing the lanes independantly.

I can post the wiring schematic and some pic's if you want.

What is the brand of hand controllers you bought and are they wired for brakes? Check the plug to make sure it is the same as the old hand controls you replaced.

If that is OK try checking for bits of loose braid across the rails. Sometimes it can be torn off and drop down the gap causing a short.
