Routed Rally Track

I finally feel like the track is staring to come together with the look I wanted. Still heaps to do but here are some shots of the whole track and a couple of close ups. The boards across the back wall are in preparation for some background, which I suspect will be basic sky & clouds as my art skills are not great.

Looking towards the right had side

Now back to the left

Couple of others for good measure

the hill section

The big dip going into the tunnel, you can get a bit of air here if you time it right, muck it up and your into the rock wall

Finally the control station and some SCX cars waiting for track time. The control station has power switch and brakes switch along with the all important fuse.

Hope the photos are not too big.

Thanks for the feedback. Its been good fun slowly putting it together and I have tried very hard not to rush anything and take my time. This forum has also provided lots of ideas.

Aim of the track was to learn about routing, plus experiment with a few different surfaces. I have grass, rocks, and bumpy sections that make it a little harder to drive on than a standard track. I really wanted to get the rally slides so wide on the corners was critical. The tree's add a new dimension on the corner at the bottom of the hill because if you slide too wide you hit the tree and loose some speed. My F1 cars cannot get around this track which is what I hoped for.

Measured the lane length with a piece of string and its about 11m in length. I haven't got timing sorted yet that is another project. I'm looking at building a standalone timing unit that doesn't need a PC. I have a great little microprocessor board and experiments to date look promising. Another thread another story.

Ok, lap length 11m and my well worn Red SCX Citreon does about 9 seconds and thats rough timing with a watch. I reckon it would be more like 7-8 seconds once you get into the groove and everything is warmed up, including the driver :P

Thanks BeastM, I do like the rally stuff. the track actually started as a test to learn about routing tracks and it kinda took over including me buying a swag of rally cars. I enjoy the way the rally cars handle, lots of sliding.

Here's a shot of the house that I built at the end of the tunnel

Thanks Mark. I'm trying to finish my own software but if it gets the better of me calling Steve might be the way to go.

Couple of update photo's showing the "river and crossing", lots of fun but the rocky crossing is a bit hard to navigate, might need to soften that one.

Thanks Moe. The track is best handled by the rally cars but some road cars namely my Camaro's and pro-slot Porsches go ok.

I have a stack of non rally cars that are now waiting for the road course to get built. I want to build a 3 lane road course as well and hope to start on that in March. Really want to finish of the rally course though, its a fine balance between building the track and running the cars. Currently in build mode.

Looks great Paul, better each time you show more pics.

What did you use for the grass that is sticking up near the water ?

There is a shop nearby here that sells these paint brushes but the brushes come on a block thats 4 x 2 inches. They look really fine and a dry grass colour. I plan on adding a few of these myself in time around the water.

Find me at Card Guys for custom trading cards

Martin - I used the woodlands scenics field grass. I cut the strands in half and then just "planted" small clumps into some PVA. I let the glue sit for a few minutes before putting the grass in. Very please with the effect always wanted to have that sort of look around water. Comes up well in the photo's, not sure how it will cope with a stray rally car ploughing through it.

I failed with my original plan for the rocky river crossing, it was just too rocky for slot cars, so I filled it in with some plaster of paris as I could not get cars through it on a regular basis. Slow worked on one lap and not the next and so on..

Anyway, its still quite rough and you will deslot if you hit it too hard so some thought is required. Here is the finished crossing, does not look as rough in the photo as it is in real life (well slot car life anyway <_< )

Here is one of my Golf's navigating the crossing.

I picked up an old SEAT Toledo Team Slot on ebay and its been a bit of fun, here she is on the back corner, not a bad runner but I think she will need some weight. Surely some one will recognise the Toledo :) very happy with another SEAT in the collection.

And lastly some pit construction, just the frame, canopy is next
